The Mt. Hood Community College softball team put up three runs in its final at-bats to slip past Lower Columbia 7-6 in Game 1 of a doubleheader Friday.

Trailing 6-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Saints pushed the winning run across before registering an out.

Nicole Powers smashed a lead-off double over the left fielder's head, and Raven Laine followed with another double to the same part of the park.

"We got those doubles and its started the momentum our way," Laine said. "We were so excited to play this game. We had a fire in our stomachs to come out on top."

Aiden Roderick singled in the next at-bat, setting the stage for Rian Snowadski to send a single through the middle. Laine came across easily to tie the game, and Roderick was speeding around third base. Lower Columbia relayed the ball home in time for a tag at the plate, but the field umpire ruled interference earlier in the base paths to give her a free pass home with the winning run.

Valeti Fifita led off the seventh with a single to right field for the Red Devils, and she would quickly advance to second base where she would get stuck.

Mt. Hood's McKenzie Pierce struck out the next batter, and shortstop Bekah Roe gobbled up a pair of grounders to end the game.

"I just looked at the runner really mean and made the throw to first," Roe said. "I wanted to make sure and come to the ball and finish the game because that was stressful."

Mt. Hood jumped on top 3-0 in the second inning powered by a two-run single by Snowadski, and edged in front again 4-3 on a Kennedy Jantzi double to center field in the fifth.

The bottom half of the Saints' order combined to hit 7-for-11 (.636) with Snowadski leading the team with four RBIs.

Pierce struck out four while going the distance in the circle.

Mt. Hood ended Game 2 on the mercy-rule in the fifth inning 11-3 after putting up nine runs in the third. Pierce, Sarah Stanfill and Jantzi all homered in the break-out inning.

The Saints traveled to Oregon City on Saturday and made quick work of Clackamas 14-4, 13-4 to remain atop the South Region standings with an 8-0 record.
