The Sandy boys tennis team picked up its first win since opening week, racing past Reynolds 6-2 on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

The Pioneers set the tone with wins in three of the first four matches to take the court. Tysen Carmony and Nolan Johns, picked up their first win of the season with a quick 6-0, 6-1 decision atop the doubles ladder.

"We were able to get to the net, and that forced them back and into a lot of mistakes," Johns said.

"It's an important win because its set the tone of the rest of the matches," Carmony said.

Likewise, Ethan Chang won handily 6-2, 6-2 atop the singles lineup, closing out the match by taking the final three games.

"He dropped a couple shots short, and I was able to move up and take advantage," Chang said. "We've lost our last few, so it was good to come out and get a team win again."

Sandy's Isaac Tippet in straight sets out of the No. 3 spot, as the Pioneers earned a split on the singles courts.

Sandy took all four tag-team matches in straight sets with Alex Krempasky and Andrew Hokanson passing the biggest challenge by winning a first-set tiebreaker in the No. 3 spot.

A constant drizzle fell during the dual with heavy rains causing a 45-minute delay early in the action. Players rotated through more balls than normal, as they became soggy with standing water in areas of the courts.

"The biggest thing we look for is slipping and sliding. If you see that, you take them off the courts," Sandy coach Chris Meyers said. "But mostly it's about being tough mentally. It's not just raining on one side of the court — both players have to deal with it."

The win leaves Sandy even at 3-3 in league duals heading into what is forecasted to be another wet week.
