Sandy takes on reigning 5A champs
You only get better by going against the best.
The Sandy High girls basketball team hopes that old adage proves true after hosting reigning 5A champion La Salle Prep in a summer league doubleheader last week.
The Falcons brought only their younger jayvee squads to the gym, but they still won both games handily against a Sandy squad that graduated eight players from its most recent season.
"We only have one girl who played much varsity last season," new Sandy coach Dave Brown said. "We have a big group of incoming freshmen, and we've had 20 girls out consistently for summer workouts."
La Salle Prep used its vaunted pressing defense to make it difficult on Sandy to get across halfcourt early in Game 1 on its way to a 68-9 win.
Ashley Allinger turned in Sandy's biggest highlight midway through the second half when she rebounded her own miss and spun back into the middle of the lane to convert the put-back opportunity.
Game 2 which featured the younger players for both squads proved more competitive in the early going with Sandy taking a quick 7-3 lead after Allinger hit a runner in the lane and Trinity Hill hit a jumper with her toes on the 3-point line.
La Salle put on a spurt to open up a double-digit margin, but Sandy answered with Alyssa McNutt spinning through the lane for a layup, and Bella Davis knocking down a corner 3 to trim the lead to 21-16 late in the first half.
La Salle pulled away after the break to take a 54-25 win.
Sandy finishes off the summer league schedule with a tournament in Gladstone on Friday and Saturday.
