TROUTDALE — The Mt. Hood Community College volleyball team came through in must-win mode to knock off Clark College in five sets in a South Region showdown Wednesday night.
The Saints were teetering on the edge of a loss after trailing the entire fifth set and finding themselves down 13-10 with time running out.
Mt. Hood's Lea'a Puleiala pounded out a kill for a side out, and she was just getting warmed up.
Sandy High graduate Sammie Brewster served up a perfect finish — a four-point flurry with three of those coming off kills by Puleiala, who ended the night with 13.
Mt. Hood stayed alive in the match by surviving a wild fourth set that saw seven lead changes. Corbett High graduate Zoe Chatterton hammered a kill to tie the score late, and the Saints claimed seven of the next 10 points to take the set.
The Saints rallied from a seven-point deficit midway through the first set, storming back to tie the score at 14 on a long service run by Puleiala.
Clark would rebuild a five-point lead late only to see Mt. Hood go on another long run this time with Katie Saephanh at the service line. Brewster reeled off four kills during the nine-point rally, including a blast on set point that gave Mt. Hood the early upper hand.
The match saw 16 total lead changes, and Mt. Hood finished the night with a 106-104 edge in points.
Brewster led the Saints with 14 kills and a 41.4% attack rate, while Chatterton added 10 kills.
