6A WRESTLING: Sandy senior gets through a wild finish for an 8-7 semifinal win at 132 pounds

PORTLAND — Sandy High senior Isaiah Shideler was the only Mount Hood Conference wrestler to reach the finals of his weight class at last weekend's 6A state wrestling tournament at Veteran's Memorial Coliseum.

The No. 2-seeded Shideler achieved that accomplishment by surviving a wild semifinal match against No. 3 Sage Brown out of Oregon City in the 132-pounds semifinals.

Shideler went on that attack from the opening whistle, spilling his opponent in front of the scorer's table seven seconds into the bout. But the move carried out of bounds before any points could be awarded.

Moments later, he attempted another takedown this time dragging his toes to stay in the circle, but the match remained scoreless. The official ruled that he was not clearly in a top position before Brown dragged the wrestlers off the mat.

The duo ended the first round deadlocked at 2-2 with Shideler emerging unscathed from a dangerous tumble as the clock ticked down.

Shideler locked in a cradle hold to start the second period with near-fall points. He had Brown curled up on his back for 10 seconds before his opponent kicked out for an escape. He would add a takedown to carry a 7-4 lead into the final two minutes.

Shideler countered his opponent through most of the third period before Brown put on a desperate flurry in the final 10 seconds to score tying near-fall points. Shideler managed to turn away from Brown just before the clock went to zeroes for an escape point to win the bout 8-7.

He went on to face top-seeded Charlie Evans out of Newberg in Saturday's final where he suffered a third-period fall.

Shideler blitzed his first two opponents with pins — the first coming in the opening minute of his match. He followed with a 16-5 major decision in the quarterfinals.

Shideler finished the tournament with 25 points and capped his senior season with a 37-3 record.

Sandy's Ford McKinnis picked up nine points with three wins in the heavyweight bracket.

In the girls tournament, Sandy's Olivia Willard (190) won her first bout by a 2-1 decision and held a 5-3 first-period lead over No. 1-seed Fiona McConnell out of Milwaukie before suffering a fall in the second period.
