Natalie Budge takes second in individual bracket; Sophie Bier, Kari Moffat runners-up in doubles

PMG PHOTO: MILES VANCE - Barlow senior Natalie Budge finished second in the Mt. Hood Conference Girls Tennis District Tournament. A Barlow senior battled for a silver medal in the finals of the Mt. Hood Conference Girls Tennis District individual finals after claiming four wins in a tough bracket of the region's best.

Natalie Budge lost to Lauren Han, Clackamas, in the finals Thursday afternoon, May 12, after strong showings in the opening rounds. En route to the championship bout, Budge downed Hailey Barnard, Clackamas, 8-0; Stella Kayser, Central Catholic, 6-1 and 6-0; Satine Simpson, Gresham, 6-2 and 6-0; and Cielo Barroso Espididio, Central, 6-0 and 6-0.

Meanwhile in the doubles bracket another pair of Bruins secured runner-up status. The team of Sophie Bier and Kari Moffat lost to Nelson's Shana and Sophie Denham in a closely contested final match.

That pair beat Sandy's Lily Wolf and Delaney Liebelt 8-1; Centennial's Natalie Rico Carvajal and Dulce Rico 6-0 and 6-1; David Douglas' Becka Whitlock and Charlotte West 6-2 and 6-4; and Sandy's Adriana Barbee and Julie Twist 6-3 and 6-3.

Pioneers Barbee and Twist took fourth in the doubles bracket after a competitive series against Clackamas' Heidi Thiele and Anh Khan which ended in a narrow 6-3 and 6-4 victory for the Cavaliers team.

Rounding out the local finishes in doubles were Barlow's Kohana Eki and Lucy Knifong making it to round four; Barlow's Kylee Edgerly and Kena Craun, Centennial's Thao Chu and Kayla Doan, Gresham's Nadia Mosley and Aleena Baisden, Barlow's Jessie Matthews and Myriam Harter, Centennial's Natalie Rico Carvajal and Dulce Rico making it to round three.

For the individual tournament Barlow's Olivia Payne and Gresham's Simpson both made it to round four, while Sandy's Lindsay Wells, Gresham's Grace Carter, and Centennial's Stephanie Chen and Cynthia Arenas all bowed out in round three.
