Micah Perry defends hurdles title; Sydney Brewster gold in discus; Parker Waugh silver in 800

PMG PHOTO: RALEIGH EMERSON - Barlows Parker Waugh finished second in the boys 800 at the 6A Track & Field State Championships. The reigning state champion got close to meeting a personal goal he has been running after all season, despite a nagging hip injury that derailed his early meets.

PMG PHOTO: JAIME VALDEZ - Barlows Micah Perry won the 110 hurdles to defend his title and claim another gold. Micah Perry, a Barlow junior, has been chasing a sub-14 second 110 hurdles performance. And during the OSAA 6A State Track & Field Championships, held Friday and Saturday, May 20-21, at Hayward Field in Eugene, he set a mark just 0.08 seconds off.

In the prelims, Perry screamed down the track at a blistering 14.08, the best time in the field and a personal record. That time also broke the Barlow school record of 14.13 seconds, set by Eric Capelle.

PMG PHOTO: LON AUSTIN - Sandy star thrower Sydney Brewster won a gold in discus and a bronze in shot. In the finals, Perry couldn't match that initial pace. He crossed the line in 14.34 seconds — settling for a gold medal and back-to-back state championships.

Throughout the two-day track & field championships, which returned to Hayward after a COVID year, Mt. Hood Conference athletes made their marks, secured medals and set records.

Sandy star thrower Sydney Brewster also earned gold at the state meet. The junior won the girls discus (140 feet), took third in the shot put (43-01.25), and finished eighth in shot put (110-01).

And Brewster had plenty of teammates to celebrate alongside, as the Pioneers' "Family of Throws" filled the podium.

Senior Elias Martinez heaved a PR toss to finish bronze in the boys shot put (51-05 feet), while a pair of sophomore teammates, Lander Marak and Grayson Brown, placed in the discus. Marak finished fourth (143-01) and Brown sixth (141-04 PR).

Centennial senior Mason Braithwait placed 12th in the shot put (43-11.50); Reynolds junior Anthony Dickson took 15th in the discus (121-11); and Sandy junior Brooke Womack tied for 11th in high jump (5 feet PR).

Throughout the meet Barlow's athletes impressed.

Senior Parker Waugh, finished second in the boys 800 (1:53.12); senior Grace Lam Tiang, finished fifth in the girls javelin (115-06 feet); and junior Boaz Amadio set a PR in the boys pole vault in his ninth place finish (13 feet).

Then in the 4x400, the Barlow boys team of sophomore Braden Arn, Perry, Waugh and junior Braydon Lee crossed sixth (3:26.43).
