PMG PHOTO: CHRISTOPHER KEIZUR - Sandy swept Reynolds 3-0 Tuesday, Sept. 27, thanks to a balanced scoring attack. Tied late in the first set, with a scrappy winless opponent fighting for every point, Sandy volleyball centered itself and dug in for the lead.

Visiting Reynolds had the Pioneers sweating midway through the first set Tuesday evening, Sept. 27, as they rallied and threatened to notch their first set win of what has been a difficult 2022 season. The Raiders took the lead on a 7-0 run, and then pulled ahead late 24-23 after a fiery ace from junior right side Brooklyn Hazel. On the following serve Hazel nearly notched another ace, but Sandy rallied defensively to tie it 24-24.

PMG PHOTO: CHRISTOPHER KEIZUR - Pioneer senior Bree Olwell had a team-high 17 serves and 5 aces. After a net violation, Pioneer senior Brooke Womack slammed an ace of her own to claim the 26-24 set win. And the Pioneers never looked back, cruising to a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 25-8, 25-18) of Reynolds on the back of balanced scoring from across the roster.

"It felt good to get the win tonight," senior captain Sydney Brewster said.

It was a nice bounce-back for Sandy (6-5, 4-3 League) after a tough 0-3 loss to Central Catholic.

As usual, Brewster shined with a tie for team-high nine kills alongside Womack. Senior Bree Olwell had 17 serves with 5 aces, and senior Skylar Leydekkers notched eight digs as libero.

"I have a lot of trust in my teammates," Brewster said of the veteran pioneers. "I know if I set them up they will make a play."

For the Raiders (0-9, 0-7 League) the star was senior outside hitter Emma Fairbanks, who collected a bevy of kills, including a flurry of scoring in the first frame that spurred the near-win.

PMG PHOTO: CHRISTOPHER KEIZUR - Sandy senior Brooke Womack had nine kills in the win. In the second set the Pioneers looked comfortable, including an 11-0 run marked by a quartet of aces from Olwell. Set three had the Raiders battle, with it knotted 8-8 midway through on the back of service and net errors from both sides. But Brewster and Womack made plays to break it open. First Brewster had back-to-back sneaky touches that slipped the ball in between defenders in lieu of her usual bombastic kills.

"I read the holes in the defense and placed the ball where it needed to be," she said.

Then Womack had a thunderous kill of her own that ricocheted off a Raiders defender into the 12th row of the stands.

The sealing point was scored by Sandy junior Keira Espino at the net.
