Position Summary:
PMG's sports reporters ensure that there is quality sports content on each of the websites within their assigned coverage area, with a focus on high school athletes. Currently, the North Clackamas County region is responsible for five websites (Lake Oswego, West Linn, Wilsonville, Oregon City and Clackamas). Reporters work collaboratively with the PMG Managing Editor of Sports and their local publisher, as well as all PMG journalists writing sports-related coverage for use throughout the PMG coverage area. Coverage will highlight the players and unique communities in each of these areas and go beyond box scores and game recaps, with a focus on unique feature stories. Essential Functions:
Produce sports content for all PMG websites and print editions within the coverage area with an eye toward content that can be shared outside the coverage area. Promote stories using social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) Prepare weekly coverage schedule of sports events to ensure that there is no duplication of effort (two or more journalists covering the same event). Pitch ideas for company-wide coverage of sports topics to the Managing Editor of Sports Work to create a sports coverage strategy that provides unique sports coverage online and can translate to the print products. Meet and exceed assigned area coverage goals as identified by the Managing Editor of Sports. Must clearly respond to the urgency of the business by balancing daily workloads and being sensitive to the needs of employees and clients. Perform other duties as assigned, such as helping with coverage beyond high school sports.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements:
Strong reporting and copyediting ability Ability to take photos with a phone; digital camera photography/videography skills a big plus Knowledge and use of social media. Understanding of grammar and ability to write clear, compelling, accurate copy on a consistent basis. Ability to be balanced, diplomatic and fair in stories covered. Knowledge of Associated Press style. Must be able to juggle multiple projects and meet multiple deadlines. Must be thorough, conscientious, well organized and have excellent follow-through on delegated tasks.
Work Experience Requirements:
One year of professional journalism experience, or equivalent experience at a student newspaper internship
Job Conditions:
Provide personal vehicle, possess valid driver's license and required insurance, and maintain safe driving record. Ability to personally drive to and from different locations as required within the Portland Metro area. Ability to work evening and weekend hours in addition to regular daytime business hours. Work more than 40 hours per week as needed. Will be expected to use the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), in addition to other software necessary for job function.
