Brought to you by Maiya Burbank - King City Senior Village - SENIOR LIVING INSIDER -

KING CITY SENIOR VILLAGE - Maiya BurbankThe 10th annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day, sponsored by the National Council on Aging, is set for Sept. 24 - the first day of fall.

At King City Senior Village, preventing falls is a priority every day of the year.

We know that falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans, threatening older adults' safety and independence.

But we also know that falling is NOT an inevitable result of aging!

Through practical lifestyle adjustments and physical activity, the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced.

At King City Senior Village, we offer daily balance-building activities including chair exercises, Tai Chi and Zumba.

When a new resident moves into one of our independent-living duplexes or apartments, we're glad to offer fall-prevention tips in the new space.

A few things to consider:

  • Avoid using throw rugs, which can slip or get tangled up underfoot.
  • Wear stay-put slippers rather than the slip-on type – and choose a non-slip sole.
  • Be mindful of small animals or pets that might get underfoot. (As much as we love them, our fur friends can unintentionally cause a painful wipeout.)
  • Bend at the knees, not at the waist.
  • If you're not sure about the safety of your next move, DON'T DO IT!
  • In the event a person falls, err on the side of caution and call 911.

    Stay safe!
