Second annual event bring local authors and readers together for unique evening

Ever wanted to pick the brain of an author. What makes them tick? How they got started? What lead them to putting pen to paper?

Well, here’s your chance.

The Tigard Public Library and the Northwest Independent Writers Association are hosting the second annual “Speed Date an Author” event Wednesday, July 10.

The event puts local authors into one-on-one conversations with the public, to discuss books, writing, independent publishing and any other topic.

Whether you’re a reader, a prospective author looking to get into the business, or just want to know more about the writing business.

The rules are simple:

About 20 local authors will be seated at tables, and attendees will choose an author, take a seat, and chat for 10 minutes. A bell will sound, signaling time to change tables.

This continues until attendees have had a chance to meet each author.

The event was a hit last year, said Pam Bainbridge-Cowan, a spokeswoman with the Northwest Independent Writers Association.

“Last year, we had so many people turn up, and we did very little marketing,” she said. “There were lines waiting to speak to each author.”

Erik Carter, a Tigard librarian, agreed.

"Last year’s Speed Date went even better than I expected. Everyone who attended really enjoyed themselves."

The event isn’t a marketing opportunity, Bainbridge-Cowan said. No books will be for sale, but the public will have the chance to learn about any aspect of the publishing world.

Bainbridge-Cowan said she hopes to speed-dates would help remove some of the stigma people have with independent publishing.

The authors include Sherwood author Lizzy Shannon, as well as Ray Macalino, Tonya Macalino, Brian Tashima, Andy Bunch, Ripley Patton, Jennifer Willis, Mark Neiman-Ross, Ted Magnuson,

Amber Cook, Jonathan Ems, Michele Makinson, Adam Copeland, Kirstin Pulioff and Connie Hill.
