Star Wars, dogs contest play big role in second Downtown Tigard Street Fair

by: SUBMITTED - Oregon's Cloud City Garrison will be on hand in downtown Tigard next weekend for the second annual Explore Downtown Tigard Street FairNow there’s something you don’t see everyday.

Darth Vader, Boba Fett and a host of Stormtroopers will be marching through downtown Tigard later this month.

But the Star Wars characters aren’t here for any nefarious purpose, they’re the guests of honor at the second annual Explore Downtown Tigard Street Fair.

The Street Fair, which runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, will feature a little something for everyone, said Dianna Weston, downtown events coordinator: Carnival games such as a dunk tank and bounce house will be on hand, as well as street vendors, sidewalk chalk drawing, arts and crafts, food, a beer garden, sidewalk sales and live music by The Shwing Daddies and the Joel Stevens Trio.

The party will take place at the corner of Main Street and Southwest Burnham Street with a main stage featuring performances by U.S. West Coast Taekwondo, Westside Dance & Gymnastics Academy and Mark & Mirror Community Theatre.

The Star Wars characters are members of Oregon’s Cloud City Garrison, a local costume club which recreates the costumes of Star Wars villains.

Photos will be available, and proceeds will go to a local charity.

‘Digital Dog contest’

by: SUBMITTED - The downtown street fair has several catergories for its first ever 'digital dog' photo contest, including most curious, smallest dog, and owner-dog lookalike. But that’s not all, said Dianna Weston, downtown events coordinator.

Have a favorite photo of man’s best friend?

Weston is looking for contestants for its “digital dog contest” and wants some picture of your favorite pooch.

As part of the Explore Downtown Tigard Street Fair, Aug. 17, the contest will award prizes for photos of your pooch in several categories, including “craziest dog,” “cutest puppy” and “owner/dog look-alike,” among others.

“We’ve already had some pretty great photos,” Weston said Monday.

Entries must be in by Aug. 12, and winners will be announced at the Street Fair.

Introducing downtown

The fair comes sandwiched between two other weekend events, the downtown’s monthly Third Friday festivities, Aug. 16, and the Tigard Area Farmer Market, Sunday, Aug. 18.

Down the street, Max’s Fanno Creek Brew Pub will be hosting its annual Summer Nano Brewfest.

“We’ve turned it into a three-day weekend,” Weston said.

The festivities are meant to highlight downtown businesses and activities, said Weston.

Although thousands of people drive past it every day, few actually stop and check out what is going on in the city’s small downtown core.

“Downtown Tigard is an often unexplored treasure chest of ethnic restaurants, specialty shops and fun things to do,” Weston said. “The Street Fair is an opportunity for our merchants to gain exposure for their products and services and for the surrounding community to listen to music, play games and generally discover what’s going on downtown.”

But once shoppers re-discover all the things downtown Tigard has to offer, Weston said, the area could start to come back, economically.

“We want to introduce them to the really cool things we have down here,” Weston said. “Whether it’s the wine crafters, or glass blowing or crossfit. There’s so much to do.”
