Fire crews battled a two-alarm fire in Tigard dental lab, Thursday morning.Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews extinguished a two-alarm fire at a dental lab in Tigard on Feb. 13.

The blaze was reported by an employee at about 5:30 a.m. at Excel Orthodontics, 15995 S.W. 74th Ave.

The lab is in a 14,000-square-foot commercial complex that also houses zip-line manufacturer Synergo and 503 Strength, a gym.

Fire crews from Tualatin Station 34 and Tigard Station 51 did not see immediate signs of a fire upon arrival. But when firefighters forced open the doors of the lab, they found heavy smoke and flames near the back of the structure.

Firefighters made a quick attack on the fire, while additional crews cut holes in the roof to release heavy smoke and heat from the building.

The structure had a common attic space where the bulk of the flames were located. As crews cut holes in the roof to ventilate the building, they discovered several burned roof trusses.

The fire caused the roof to buckle, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze before the roof collapsed.

Crews said there was a risk of the fire spreading because the orthodontics office housed highly flammable dental equipment and material.

Due to the heavy smoke, crews had to use a thermal imaging camera to navigate inside the building.

TVF&R officials said the building was not equipped with, and was not required to have, a sprinkler system.

There were no reported injuries.

Investigators say the fire was started by an overworked exhaust fan, which ran continuously. The fire caused about $1.5 million in damages.

It took 48 firefighters to bring the blaze under control.
