Society of Professional Journalists in Oregon and Southwest Washington presented awards Saturday

The Times serving Tigard, Tualatin and Sherwood earned several reporting and photography awards Saturday from the Society of Professional Journalists in Oregon and Southwest TIMES PHOTOS AND DESIGN: DAN BROOD - Sports editor Dan Brood earned honors for the sports photos he took during the series.

Tigard reporter Geoff Pursinger claimed two first-place honors in the profiles and social issues reporting categories with his "Body of stone" and "Out in the Cold" articles respectively.

Former Tualatin reporter Saundra Sorenson earned first place in the business feature category for her "Jiggles No More?" article and second place in the long feature category for her article "The The Tribe Has Spoken."

Sports editor Dan Brood claimed second place in the sports photography category for a photo called "Success at the Series."

Journalists from Oregon and Southwest Washington celebrated their work in 2013 at the annual SPJ Oregon/SW Washington awards banquet at the Hotel Lucia in downtown Portland.

The Times' sister paper, the Beaverton Valley Times, was also recognized with seven awards for social issues reporting, profiles, comprehensive coverage, business features and photography. The staff also claimed a third-place top honor for general excellence.
