Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews for years have taken part in the annual fundraiser, which collects donations to help find a cure for muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases.

Firefighters ask passing motorists to drop a donation into their boots. Crews will be taking to the streets around Bridgeport Village, from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

TVF&R hopes to collect about $60,000 for MDA in the next month.

“We know the money we raise definitely makes a difference in the lives of people affected by neuromuscular diseases, and that it helps them get the care they need,” said Rocky Hanes, president of Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue's union Local 1660. “Fill the Boot is (a) proud tradition for us, and it’s a great way for our firefighters to be in our community reminding residents that we are always ready to help.”

Money raised will be donated to the Columbia/Willamette Chapter of the MDA, which supports more than 100 families in the area.

In addition to research funding, donations help families purchase flu shots, attend support groups, assist with repairs of medical equipment and help children struggling with the disease to attend MDA’s annual summer camp.

This is the 60th anniversary of Fill the Boot.

Last year, the IAFF donated $26.2 million to MDA. The organization has raised $530 million for MDA since the partnership began.
