FILE - Cabela's in Tualatin was involved in a grant award to the Oregon Tuna Classic this month. The sporting goods store Cabela's announced a partnership with the Oregon Tuna Classic this month that it says is intended "to combat hunger in Oregon and address the lack of sustainable protein for families in need."

The Cabela's Outdoor Fund awarded a $3,700 grant to the Oregon Tuna Classic, with the recommendation of Cabela's in Tualatin, to assist with the costs of canning and processing the tuna caught during the annual event, which will be held in Garibaldi on Sept. 1 and Sept. 2.

During the Oregon Tuna Classic, teams of anglers compete to catch as many tuna as they can to feed the hungry. Tuna caught during the event are canned and donated to the Oregon Food Bank. More than 1 million pounds of food has been donated since the event began in 2005, according to the event website.

"The passion and dedication these fishermen and women show is unparalleled," said Asha Aiello, marketing manager of the Tualatin Cabela's, in a news release. "It was a natural partnership between the Outdoor Fund, Tualatin and the OTC."

The Oregon Tuna Classic has been registered as a nonprofit group since 2006.
