Investigators do not yet know why a car driven by Douglas Cansdale of Portland left the highway Monday.

PHOTO COURTESY OF OREGON STATE POLICE - A single-car incident on Monday afternoon took the life of Portland man Douglas Cansdale.A car drifted off Interstate 205 Monday afternoon, smashed through a guardrail and hit a light pole, killing the driver, Douglas Cansdale, 53, of Portland.

Investigators do not know what caused the incident.

Cansdale was pronounced deceased at the scene. Oregon State The crash was reported at 1:15 p.m.

According to state troopers, Cansdale's black 2016 Nissan Altima was traveling eastbound on I-205 just north of Interstate 5 when the driver apparently lost control and went off the highway. The Altima hit a metal guardrail, continued across the grassy median and hit a light pole. It is believed that speed and the wet roadway surface were contributing factors. The region saw heavy rains on Monday for the first time in several weeks.

State Police were assisted by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and the Washington County Medical Examiner's Office.
