The annual event raises money for a scholarship in memory of Cpl. Matthew Lembke.

COURTESY OF FREEZE FRAME PHOTOGRAPHY - Uniformed youth in the Young Marines participate along with others in last year's Regatta Run 5K.For the ninth consecutive year, runners and walkers will come together for the Regatta Run 5K in Tualatin on Saturday morning, Oct. 21.

The course begins and ends at Tualatin Community Park, proceeding across the Ki-a-Kuts Bridge into Durham City Park and neighboring Cook Park in Tigard before returning back across the Tualatin River. The start time is 9 a.m.

Organizers pledge 100 percent of race proceeds to a scholarship fund benefiting graduating seniors at Tualatin High School. The fund was set up in honor of Marine Cpl. Matthew Lembke, a 2005 alumnus of Tualatin High School who died after an improvised explosive device exploded beneath him while he was on foot patrol in Afghanistan in June 2009.

The Cpl. Matthew Lembke Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded $128,500 in total since the Regatta Run started, according to organizer Kathy Hollamon. Scholarships have been awarded to 56 students to date.

Hollamon said this year's goal is to raise $25,000 for scholarship awards to students in the Class of 2018.

The Regatta Run traditionally precedes the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta, Tualatin's largest one-day community festival. However, last year, the run was held despite the cancellation of the Pumpkin Regatta due to high winds in the forecast. (The festival is fully expected to return this year.)

Registration for the Regatta Run is available on for $35 per person.

While online registration is strongly encouraged, participants can also register in person at Road Runner Sports, 7063 S.W. Nyberg St. in Tualatin, for $40 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20.
