Naheed Brown, a Mary Woodward first-grade teacher, receives a $500 cash prize is entered into Oregon Teacher of the Year.

COURTESY OF TIGARD-TUALATIN SCHOOL DISTRICT - Naheed Brown, surrounded by her student supporters, was surprised with an announcement Thursday that she had been named an Oregon Regional Teacher of the Year. A Mary Woodward Elementary teacher has been named a 2019 Oregon Regional Teacher of the Year.

Naheed Brown was notified officially of the honor Thursday, May 17, during a surprise announcement.

In addition to a $500 cash prize, Brown's name will be entered as a candidate for the Oregon Teacher of the Year, which is announced in September.

Brown has been a Mary Woodward first-grade teacher since 2007.

Tigard-Tualatin School District spokeswoman Susan Stark Haydon called Brown an amazing teacher who is patient, gentle and kind.

"She takes an integrated and creative approach to teaching the required curriculum," Stark Haydon said. "Her students produce sophisticated work, are challenged and love having her as their teacher."

Stark Haydon said Brown also was a leader in the district's equity efforts, serving as a member of both her school and district equity teams. In addition, she volunteers two afternoons per week leading an after-school homework club for students at her school who are English language learners.

Brown was one of 13 Regional Teachers of the Year — selected by a diverse group of representatives as well as education leaders — in a recognition program that began this year.
