The fire occurred today at the St. James Apartment complex on Hall Boulevard.

A Tigard man was severely burned and taken to a burn center at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center Saturday afternoon following a fire at a Tigard apartment complex.

At 3:47 p.m. today, firefighters from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Station No. 51 were called to a report of a fire at the St. James Apartment in the 11000 block of Hall Boulevard, following multiple calls to 911.

Arriving at the scene, firefighters discovered a possible fire victim outside an upstairs apartment.

Both Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Metro West ambulance crews began to immediately provide lifesaving treatment to the fire victim, while additional arriving fire crews began to attack the apartment fire.

The fire was confined to a single upstairs apartment unit with no fire spread to adjacent units. The fire victim was the only occupant home at the time of the fire.

The three additional residents of the fire apartment were displaced by the incidents while all remaining apartment occupants were able to return to their apartments after firefighters cleared the scene.

The fire victim, an adult male, was transported to the burn center at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland.  His condition is currently unknown.

Meanwhile, firefighters discovered an unconscious dog inside the apartment while searching for other victims.  The dog was transported by Tigard police to a 24-hour veterinary clinic in Tualatin for treatment. The status of the animal is unknown at this time.

In addition to TVF&R, first responders assisting with the fire included the Lake Oswego Fire Department, Metro West Ambulance and the Tigard Police Department. Fire Investigators from TVF&R were on scene and planned to work through the night to determine the cause of the fire.

The apartments had working smoke alarms but did not have a fire sprinkler system. When a fire sprinkler system is present, the likelihood of injuries and costly damage is dramatically reduced. More information about fire sprinkler systems can be found at: http://www.tvfr.com/index.aspx?nid=144.
