Victim in fatal shooting in Eugene identified as student from Tigard
The victim of the fatal shooting that took place in a parking lot near the University of Oregon Campus early on the morning of Saturday, May 4, has been identified as Alex Oyombe Gradin, 21, a 2016 Tigard High School graduate.
Gradin played football and ran track at Tigard High. He was a student at Lane Community College at the time of his death.
The Eugene Police Department released his identification.
Police say they received calls regarding shots fired at East 13th Avenue and Kincaid Street at 1:44 a.m. Saturday. A student living at a fraternity house next door said he heard the gunshots and rushed out to find Gradin bleeding from a chest wound. Police responded to the scene and found Gradin on the ground with life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The witness said he saw someone drive away in a black car.
The suspect is still at large, and no arrests have been made in connection to the case.
Gradin's family released the following statement:
"We appreciate the outpouring of love and concern we have received in the tragic death of our son, Alex. He was an unexpected blessing to our lives when he joined us as a baby in Kenya and grew to be a compassionate, thoughtful young man. He naturally made many friends all over the world, who are grieving right now. We request at this time that you allow us to heal and support each other as a family."
