County commissioners' pay has been tied to that of circuit court judges. This measure changes that.

PMG FILE PHOTO - Kathryn Harrington, chair of the Washington County Board of Commissioners, could be in line for a raise after voters approved a salary commission and decoupled the commissioners' pay from that of circuit court judges.Voters in Washington County have approved Ballot Measure 34-300, setting up an independent salary commission to set the rate of pay for the five county commissioners, unofficial election results indicate.

The measure amends the county charter, which currently sets the salary of the chair at 80% of that of a circuit court judge and the commissioners at 40% of the chair's salary.

County commissioners who referred the measure to voters argued that with Washington County growing in population and their job responsibilities increasing, they shouldn't receive the equivalent of part-time pay in comparison to a judge.

Commissioner Roy Rogers was the only member of the board to vote against placing the measure on the ballot.

The measure is passing with 60.9% of voters in favor, according to results as of Wednesday morning, Nov. 4.

The five members of the salary commission will be appointed by the Board of Commissioners. The county says the appointees will be "human resource professionals with experience in compensation."

Also headed to approval is Measure 34-300, another charter amendment that does away with an antiquated prohibition on the county adopting new land use ordinances between November and February or even holding a hearing about such an ordinance prior to March.

That measure is passing with 64.5% of the vote in unofficial results.

All results remain unofficial until certified. They may change as additional ballots are tabulated this week.
