Winona Grange to distribute free seeds
Tualatin's Winona Grange will be giving away vegetable, herb and flower seed packets at the grange hall on Saturday, May 8, and Tuesday, May 11.
Bi-Mart Corporation is donating the seeds that stores did not sell by an Dec. 2020 expiration date.
"Bi-Mart cannot sell them in 2021, nor can Winona Grange," according to a grange news release. "However, if you plant and care for the seeds according to package directions, they will germinate."
The packets are non-GMO Ferry-Morse brand that include some heirloom packets and some organic packets.
Grange members will be on hand to offer gardening advice and tips.
The Winona Grange has offered free seeds since 2009 and has provided free seed packets to community gardens and groups that promote gardening throughout the state. Last year, the grange distributed 70 boxes of seeds with each box containing 200 to 400 packets and many of the seed recipients have plans to donate the produce they grow to local food banks.
Hours of the seed distribution are from 3 to 5 p.m. on May 8 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 11. The grange is located at 8340 S.W. Seneca St.
The Tualatin Winona Grange celebrated its 125th anniversary Sept. 19, 2020, but had to postpone a formal public celebration because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
