Tigard Discovery Shop closing after 38 years

After 38 years in Tigard, the Discovery Shop, which is owned and operated by the American Cancer Society, is shutting its doors.

The resale store, "a long-standing icon in the community, is planning to remain open for business offering incredible discounts on gently used goods, through May 22," according to a news release from the American Cancer Society.

"Like many organizations, the Society experienced significant challenges due to COVID-19, including reductions in financial and in-kind donations," the release stated. "While a difficult decision, closing the shop will allow ACS to direct a greater percentage of funds to its lifesaving mission, including nearly $12 million currently funding cancer researchers at OSU and OHSU."

The upscale resale store is located at 11545 S.W. Durham Road, Suite B-3.

"We are sad to see the store close," said Beth Cahill, manager of Tigard's American Cancer Society Discovery Shop. "This has been a family of sorts for American Cancer Society staff and volunteers for nearly four decades. ACS staff, donors and volunteers operate as a unit, dedicated to the same cause, and we are all dedicated to continuing the fight against cancer including ensuring local patients have access to information and services."COURTESY PHOTO: AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY - The Discovery Shop, which had offered upscale retail items over the years, is closing for good on May 22.

Dave's Hot Chicken opens in Tualatin

A new franchise to the state, Dave's Hot Chicken, officially opened its first restaurant in Tualatin on April 30.

"We're absolutely thrilled," Alex Karcher, one of the franchisees of the new business, told KOIN's AM Extra the day it opened. "The menu is real simple. We have tenders. We have sliders. We have fries. We have kale slaw, mac and cheese, sodas and milkshakes and that's about it."

He said their chicken has seven different spice levels – from No Spice to Reaper.

Karcher's father Joe, who is also a franchisee of Dave's Hot Chicken, is the son of Carl N. Karcher, the founder of Carl's Jr. restaurants.

According to the Franchise Times, the Karchers plan on opening four more Dave's Hot Chicken in the Portland area.

The Tualatin location is at 7715 S.W. Nyberg St.
