Wilsonville Planning Commissioner Aaron Woods faces West Linn-Wilsonville School Board Chair Chelsea King in Democratic primary

PMG FILE PHOTO - Election results trickled in at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 17.

This story was updated from its original version.

Based on results as of Sunday May 22, Wilsonville Planning Commissioner Aaron Woods leads West Linn-Wilsonville School District School Board Chair Chelsea King in the Democratic primary for the revamped Senate District 13 by a vote of 54% to 45%.

At that point, 11,078 ballots had been counted. However, 10,691 of those votes derive from Washington County as the Clackamas County elections department continued its glacial vote-counting pace. Clackamas County indicated that it may not have all ballots counted until June, as it must manually count ballots due to defective bar codes.

Senate District 13 is currently represented by Kim Thatcher, R-Keiser, but redistricting means that Thatcher must run for Senate District 11 and a new senator from Tigard, Sherwood, King City and other areas will be elected next November. The winner of the Democratic primary will face Republican and real estate broker John Veliz in the November election.

Woods is a retired Xerox executive who is also on the Clackamas Community College Board of Directors and has lived in Wilsonville for 26 years. He hopes to help make housing more affordable and improve broadband access.

King is also a Wilsonville resident and has served on the school board since 2015 and in the chair position since 2021. She hopes to address poverty and addiction and bolster mental health services.
