Tigard student collecting pet supplies for adoption baskets
A Tigard High School senior is hoping to collect pet supplies this weekend, part of her Love Unleashed initiative for her Girl Scout troop, all in an effort to help pet owners in need.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 19, Deja Fitzwater will collect needed items such as cat and dog food/water bowls, wet and dry foods for both, bones, cat litter, cat litter scoops, collars, leashes and more.
Her project stems from a broader goal of making the world a better place at the local level and she worked with an international organization, Fandom Forward, to create a fan activist chapter of community members who care about animals.
Her Love Unleashed Initiative creates adoption baskets to donate to local rescue shelters.
"People are often willing to adopt a pet, but may find themselves unable to because of upfront expenses needed. Through my (Girl Scout) Gold Award project, I want to help end pet homelessness and make the process of adoption more equitable—and that starts with a simple bag of food being donated or a toy being made," she said.
Fitzwater hopes to get enough supplies to create 100 adoption baskets for families to not only make adopting more equitable for families in the community, but also to help ease in first-time adopters when they're adjusting to a new pet.
Tigard High School is located at 9000 S.W. Durham Road.
