North Clackamas Chamber of Commerce Board votes to oppose bond slated to appear on the November ballot

The North Clackamas Chamber's Board of Directors has voted to oppose Metro's transportation bond slated to appear on the November ballot.

North Clackamas Chamber logoThis is the wrong time to add another enormous tax to business owners who already are struggling with pandemic shutdowns and associated economic impacts.

It is important to this chamber and to our business community that Clackamas County invest in our roadways and infrastructure and we support the county in many ways.

Unfortunately, the Metro Transportation Bond is not the solution that we need. It will require us to direct our taxes to Metro's recommended projects and will not provide the unique infrastructure improvements that our county requires to remain sustainable.

The "no new roads" approach does nothing to relieve congestion for Clackamas County residents. It does nothing to expand the Sunrise Corridor to access lands that reside within the urban-growth boundary, and it does nothing to help us develop lands within Clackamas County to bring in new businesses and build affordable housing.

Metro's expensive new transportation measure does little to remedy the problems of crippling congestion and desperately needed capacity. Clackamas County's disproportionately small allocation of projects are focused almost entirely on bicycle, pedestrian and safety improvements. The largest project from the bond measure benefits Washington and Multnomah counties with a light-rail line from Portland to Bridgeport Village.

The North Clackamas Chamber urges our members to vote "no" on Metro's new transportation "payroll" tax.
