COURTESY CANCER CURESADERS - Cancer Curesaders, a local advocacy group, will host a family FunFest this Saturday at the Planet Fitness in Beaverton.Family caregivers series offered online for first time

Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services and Tuality Healthcare have been sponsoring Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week in-person education program, for many years.

This fall, they are offering an online class for people who are unable to attend the class in person. Caregivers will be able to participate in the class at home using their own computer and internet connection. This class is part of a pilot program and will use interactive technology similar to Skype. Participants will be able to communicate with other family caregivers and class instructors in real time.

The classes are 1 to 2:30 p.m. each Wednesday from Sept. 13 through Oct. 18.

This educational series is designed to help unpaid family caregivers take care of themselves while they are caring for a relative or friend with a chronic illness. Participants will learn how to reduce personal stress, communicate their needs effectively in challenging situations, deal with difficult emotions, and make tough caregiving decisions.

The class is free and is appropriate for anyone helping a parent, spouse or friend. The person in their care may live at home, in a facility or across the country.

Class size for this pilot project is very limited. Registration is required by calling the Washington County Family Caregiver Support Program at 503-846-3089.
