Tigard strikes for long TDs in win over Glencoe

TIGARD — The Tigard High School football team opened defense of its Pacific Conference title in impressive fashion.

The two-time conference champion Tigers opened league play on Friday by running to a 55-26 win over Glencoe in a conference opener played Friday at Tigard High School.

Glencoe fell to 1-2 on the season with the setback.

With the win, it 15th straight in Pacific Conference play, Tigard moved to 3-0 on the season.

The Tigers showed their big-play capabilities in the victory, as four of their eight touchdown plays covered at least 40 yards.

The biggest of Tigard’s big plays was a 99-yard touchdown pass play from senior quarterback Jett Even to senior receiver Daren Rodrigues, coming on the final play of the first quarter.

Senior fullback A.J. Hotchkins gave Tigard a quick 7-0 lead in the contest with his 5-yard scoring run coming with 9 minutes and 28 seconds left to play in the first quarter.

Senior running back Manu Rasmussen followed with a 71-yard touchdown burst coming with 7:19 left in the opening period.

An 11-yard touchdown run by Even pushed the Tigard lead to 21-0 with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter.

Then, after Glencoe got a 65-yard touchdown pass play from Avery Elrod to Tom Ward, Even hooked up with Rodrigues for the 99-yard scoring play that gave the Tigers a 28-7 advantage at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Tigard got a 68-yard touchdown run by Rasmussen, a 41-yard touchdown pass from Even to Rodrigues and a 19-yard TD run by junior Tyler Walker, giving the Tigers a 48-7 halftime lead.

Tigard’s final touchdown came on a 5-yard run by Justin Alvarizares with 5:36 left in the game.

Tigard, as a team, had 583 yards of total offense in the win. The Tigers got 414 yards on the ground, coming on 37 carries.

Rasmussen led the rushing attack with 175 yards on seven carries. Walker added 110 yards on 11 carries and Alvarizares had 105 yards on 12 carries.

Even completed five of seven pass attempts for 163 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Rodrigues had two receptions for 140 yards.

For the Tigard defense, Bruin Campbell had a pair of interceptions. Alvarizares and junior Samuel Inos each added an interception. Senior Joe Lobbato, junior Austin Goodhouse, Inos, senior Janak Wared and Gavin Kim each had a tackle for a loss. Senior Alex Janac led the Tigers with eight total tackles.

For Glencoe, Kainoa Hanchett ran for 98 yards on 16 carries. Kyle Campbell had four receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

Elrod completed nine of 21 pass attempts for 243 yards and three touchdowns.

Tigard will be back in action Friday when it faces Century in a Pacific Conference game starting at 7 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium. The Jaguars are 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in Pacific Conference play.
