Cuthbertson, Pfefferkorn shine bright for Sherwood

by: DAN BROOD - LET IT GO -- Sherwood High School senior Elyse Cuthbertson gets ready to let the javelin fly last Thursday during the first day of the Northwest Oregon Conference district meet. SANDY — Dramatics.

Pure dramatics.

And that dramatic outcome didn’t go in Elyse Cuthbertson’s favor.

But the Sherwood High School senior didn’t let those dramatics get her down.

Oh no.

She turned it into instant motivation. And, one day later, the motivated Cuthbertson earned a pair of bids to the Class 5A state track and field championships.

Cuthbertson, after just missing out on a state bid last Thursday in the javelin event, came storming back on Friday to claim state berths in both the discus and shot put competition at the Northwest Oregon Conference district track and field championships, held at Sandy High School.

“I’m really looking forward to state,” Cuthbertson said. “I want to end the season in a great place, at the University of Oregon.”

The top two finishers in each event at the district meet, as well as those competitors and relay teams that meet state qualifying standards, advance to the Class 5A state meet, which will be held Friday at Saturday at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene.

But Wilsonville senior Rebecca Wenz, in the very last throw of the competition, had a toss of 135-9, giving her a district crown and knocking Cuthbertson out of a state-qualifying spot.

“That was good competition with the best athletes,” Cuthbertson said after the javelin competition. “It was good to see her (Wenz) do that. She was best at the end. But this will definitely give me more motivation. I’ll be back.”

She came back in a big way.

On Friday, Cuthbertson earned a state-meet bid in the shot put with her second-place mark of 37-0. She also earned a district championship in the discus with her winning distance of 125-1. That mark makes her the No. 1 seed for the discus event at the upcoming state meet.
