Six local players to take part in the all-star football tilt

by: DAN BROOD - SHERWOOD STAR -- Keegan Lawrence is one of two Bowmen that will be playing in Saturday's Les Schwab Bowl. HILLSBORO — There’s going to be a Timberwolf playing on the same team as a pair of Tigers.

That already makes things plenty intriguing — but it gets even better.

That’s because, on the other sideline, there’s going to be a pair of Bowmen who are ready for action. Heck, there’s even going to be a Westside Christian graduate in the mix.

That said, there should be a strong local flavor at the 67th-annual Les Schwab Bowl, a high school football all-star game, which will start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium.

The game will feature many of the top graduating Class 5A and Class 6A players from around the state.

Tigard and Tualatin players will be part of the South team in Saturday’s contest. Sherwood’s players will take the field for the North squad.

Among the Bowmen set to take part in Saturday’s game is Keegan Lawrence (6-feet, 190 pounds), who is listed as a running back for the North team.

Lawrence had what could easily be called a spectacular senior season at Sherwood, as he helped take the Bowmen to the Class 5A state championship game.

As a Sherwood senior, Lawrence rushed for 2,032 yards on 118 carries (a 17.2 yards-a-carry average) while running for 31 touchdowns. He also had 10 receptions for 354 yards and seven more scores.

Lawrence was named the Northwest Oregon Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Year. He also was tabbed the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state while also being a Class 5A first-team All-State pick on offense.

Lawrence also was a first-team all-conference and first-team all-state selection on defense as a safety.

Joining Lawrence on the North team will be Sherwood’s Jake Reimer (5-11, 210), who is listed as a running back/linebacker.

In his senior year at Sherwood, Reimer was named the NWOC Defensive Player of the Year while also being a first-team all-state pick.

by: JAIME VALDEZ - TIGARD STAR -- Tigard High School senior fullback/linebacker A.J. Hotchkins (right) will be playing in Saturday's Les Schwab Bowl. He led the Bowmen with 67 total tackles this fall, with four quarterback sacks. On offense, Reimer, playing at fullback, rushed for 874 yards and 13 touchdowns on just 50 carries.

The South team will feature a pair of Tigard standouts in A.J. Hotchkins and Nick Duron, who were both Class 6A first-team all-state selections on defense.

Hotchkins (6-0, 235) is listed as a running back/linebacker for the South squad. As a Tiger senior, Hotchkins rushed for 390 yards and six touchdowns on 48 carries. He also had 10 receptions for 147 yards and four more touchdowns. On defense, Hotchkins paced Tigard with 57 total tackles.

Duron (6-4, 205) is listed as a tight end/defensive end for the South. As a senior, Duron led the Tigers on defense with 12.5 quarterback sacks and 15 total tackles for losses. He also had two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

On offense, Duron had 12 catches for 226 yards and four touchdowns.

The Tigers will team up with a Timberwolf on Saturday, as Tualatin’s Jason Porter will also be playing fore the South squad.

Porter (6-3, 255), will play on the defensive line for the South. As a Tualatin senior, Porter was named the Pacific Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year while also earning first-team Class 6A all-state honors.

Jacob Sturtevant, a Westside Christian High School graduate, will play for the North team in Saturday’s game.

Sturtevant (5-10, 163), who played for Westview (Westside Christian doesn’t field a football team), will play at defensive back for the North team. As a senior, Sturtevant was a first-team All-Metro League and honorable-mention all-state pick as a defensive back.

There will be even more of a local influence to the North team, as Sherwood coach Greg Lawrence will serve as an assistant coach for the squad.

Steve Pine of Central Catholic is the head coach for the North team. The rest of his coaching staff includes Bob Boyer of Beaverton, Christian Swain of Roosevelt, Steve Jones of Glencoe and Mike Vaught of Canby.

John Mannion of Silverton is the head coach of the South team. His coaching staff includes Charlie Hall of Ashland, Dave Heuberger of Springfield, Mike Mitchell of North Medford, Isaac Parker of McNary and Shawn Stanley of West Salem.

Ticket prices for the Les Schwab Bowl are: $15 for reserved adult; $12 for reserved student/senior; $8 for general admission adult and $6 for general admission student/senior. Tickets are available at the door, or at (through Friday). Gates open at noon.

Saturday’s game will wrap up a week full of activities for the North and South teams.

Event proceeds from the Les Schwab Bowl benefit the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association general scholarship fund and all of Oregon’s Class 5A and 6A schools.
