Bowmen boys fall to Gresham rally
GRESHAM — The Sherwood High School boys soccer team got off to a flying start in its season-opening match.
But, unfortunately for the Bowmen, they weren't quite able to turn that fast start into a victory.
Sherwood, after claiming a 3-0 lead in the second half, fell 4-3 to Gresham in a non-league match played Tuesday at Gresham High School.
In Tuesday's match, the Bowmen went up 1-0 early in the second half, when senior Danny Dhas scored on a rebound shot, following an attempt by senior Christian Martinez.
About five minutes later, Sherwood upped the margin to 2-0, when Martinez scored on a header off a cross from junior Isaac Woidyla.
The Bowmen pushed the lead to 3-0 when Martinez scored again, this time off an assist from junior Caden Brandt, coming with 16 minutes and 7 seconds left to play.
However, the Gophers rallied to score four late goals to get the victory.
The Bowmen will be back in action today (Thursday) when they host Southridge in a non-league match starting at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, Sherwood will travel to Wilson for a 7 p.m. non-league contest.
In other boys soccer matches played on Tuesday, Tualatin fell 3-2 at Southridge and Westside Christian defeated Santiam Christian 2-0.
In girls play on Tuesday, the defending Class 6A state champion Sherwood squad opened its season with a 3-1 home non-league victory over Southridge.
The Westside Christian girls ran to a 7-0 victory at Taft.
Tualatin's scheduled home match with Lincoln was postponed.
