Bowmen beat West Linn to finish TRL play
SHERWOOD — The Sherwood High School baseball team finished up Three Rivers League play in winning fashion, getting a 7-4 win over West Linn in a league finale played Friday at Sherwood High School.
With the victory, the Bowmen moved to 11-6 in TRL play, putting them in fourth place in the final league standings. West Linn fell to 13-4, putting the Lions in a tie with Lake Oswego and Tualatin for the league title.
Senior Jacob Matzat picked up the pitching win for Sherwood, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out four and walking two in five innings of work. Matzat also hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs.
Junior Anthony Garrett went 3 for 4 at the plate with a run scored. Senior Hayden Gilbert went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Senior Takumi Kammerzell doubled and drove in a pair of runs.
On Monday, Sherwood ran to a 13-0 win over Gresham in a non-league game played at Gresham High School. Gilbert had a big day at the plate, going 3 for 5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Senior Bryce Vaughn, Gilbert, Kammerzell and junior Sage Dunaway added two hits apiece.
Senior Riley Aggson threw four shutout innings on the mound, and junior Braden Thorn threw two.
Sherwood, which was scheduled to host Wilson in a non-league game on Wednesday, improved to 17-9 on the season with the win at Gresham.
The Bowmen will open the Class 6A state playoffs on Monday, when the travel to face Roseburg in a game starting at 4:30 p.m. at Legion Field in Roseburg's Stewart Park.
Roseburg, the No. 2 team out of the Southwest Conference, is 16-7 on the season.
Sherwood, if it wins in Roseburg on Monday, will either travel to face Central Catholic or it will host Wilson in a state-playoff second-round game on Wednesday.
