The Sherwood High School baseball team put together a solid 2018 season.
But the Bowmen saw that season come to an end with a 5-1 loss to Roseburg in a Class 6A state playoff first-round game played Friday at Legion Field in Roseburg.
With the loss, Sherwood, the No. 4 team out of the Three Rivers League finished its season with a final overall record of 18-10. Roseburg, the No. 2 team out of the Southern Oregon Conference, improved to 18-7 with the victory. The Indians also advanced to the second round of the state playoffs, where they were slated to play on the road against Central Catholic on Wednesday.
Junior Anthony Garrett scored Sherwood's only run in the playoff contest, coming in on a sacrifice fly by senior Hayden Gilbert in the top of the sixth inning.
The Bowmen had three hits in the contest, singles by seniors Jacob Matzat, Nic Garrison and Takumi Kammerzell.
Prior to the state playoff game, Sherwood scored a 2-1 win over Wilson in a postseason tune-up game, played May 16 at Sherwood High School.
Bowmen senior Riley Aggson hit a home run in that game. Garrett and Matzat each had a pair of hits. Matzat, Garrett and Kammerzell all pitched for Sherwood in the win.
Friday's playoff loss marked the final high school game for Sherwood seniors Bryce Vaughn, Gilbert, Kammerzell, Lucas Hughes, Matzat, Aggson, Joshua Felix and Garrison.
