Sherwood team makes big throws at regionals
They must have strong arms in Sherwood.
And the rest of the nation is going to find out about it.
The Sherwood Youth Track Club is sending five javelin throwers to the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championships following strong performances at the USATF Region 13 Championships, held July 5-8 at Summit High School in Bend.
Four of those Sherwood javelin throwers — Asher Krauel, Sheppard Kilkenny, Austin Milton and Evylee Bugher — will be going to the national meet as regional champions.
At the regional meet, Krauel took first place in the boys javelin ages 15-16 division with a throw of 158 feet, 0 inches. Milton won the boys 13-14 javelin competition with a toss of 143-3.75.
Kilkenny triumphed in the boys 11-12 division with a throw of 128-4.5 and Bugher won the in the girls 9-10 division with a personal-best mark of 84-1.75.
McKenzie Milton qualified for nationals in the girls javelin 11-12 division with a fifth-place throw of 76-0.5.
Also for Sherwood in the javelin, Jazon Clement (second in the boys 11-12 at 101-9.75), Thomas Flaker (second in the boys 9-10 at 91-7.25) and Boden Flaker (fourth in the boys 9-10 at 82-4.25) all qualified for the national event, but will be unable to attend.
Krauel, Kilkenny and Austin also won state championships in the javelin competition before moving on to the regional event.
Kilkenny also won gold at the regional championships in the boys 11-12 discus event with a throw of.
Also for the Sherwood Youth Track Club, Alexandra Verkamp ran to victory in the girls 17-18 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 29.85 seconds. Hayden Shrimp triumphed in the girls 9-10 1,500 racewalk with a mark of 9:53.83.
The USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championships was scheduled to start Monday, and runs through Sunday, North Carolina A&T University, located in Greensboro, N.C.
