The Tigers come away with a 43-28 victory in the Three Rivers League dual match opener

CHRISTOPHER GERMANO: FOR THE TIMES - The Tigard High School wrestling team opened its Three Rivers League schedule by scoring a 43-28 win over Canby.It was a good start, and a good final result, for the Tigard High School wrestling team.

The Tigers sprinted out to a 34-4 lead after eight matches on their way to scoring a 43-28 win over Canby in a Three Rivers League-opening dual match held last Thursday at Tigard High School.

With the victory, the Tigers got off to a 1-0 start in league matches, while Canby starts off at 0-1.

Freshman Atticus Waddell got Tigard off to a fast start in the contest, as he posted a 14-6 major-decision win over Canby's Zach Polzel in the 106-pound match.

Tiger junior Cameron O'Connor followed that up with a 15-0 technical fall win over Nick Marquez at 113 pounds, giving Tigard an early 9-0 lead in the team score.

Canby got a major-decision win at 120, but senior Killian Ryan got Tigard back on the winning track, as he pinned Nichola Froyd at 126 pounds. Tigard junior Zack Vorvick then posted a 9-1 major-decision win over Dominic Netter at 132.

Tigard senior Emilio Jimenez notched an 8-7 decision win over Josh Rowden at 138 and sophomore Nehemiah Demisse got an injury-default win at 145.

Tigard junior Jordy Mendez then upped the Tiger lead to 34-4 by pinning Zack Markell in the 152-pound bout.

Canby got wins in the next four matches, but Tigard finished strong. Tiger junior Carter Dennis pinned Brent Patterson at 220 pounds, and Tigard senior Javier Velasquez got a 3-1 decision win over Kyler Boyd at 285, wrapping up the Tigers' 43-28 victory.

Tigard will be back in action on Thursday, when it will host Oregon City in a Three Rivers League dual match starting at 7 p.m. at Tigard High School. The Pioneers are 0-1 in TRL matches.
