Tigers, Wolves earn top TRL football accolades
It could easily be said that the Tigard and Tualatin high school football teams enjoyed banner 2018 season.
The Tigers went 10-2 on the campaign, while reaching the quarterfinal round of the Class 6A state playoffs. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves went 7-4 and made it to the second round of the state playoffs.
Each team would end up being well-represented on the Three Rivers League all-league list.
In fact, a Tiger and a Timberwolf ended up sharing one of the league's top honors. Tigard junior Max Lenzy and Tualatin junior John Miller were named the Three Rivers League Co-Defensive Players of the Year.
Lenzy, a cornerback, had 10 interceptions on the season for the Tigers. Miller was a hard-hitting inside linebacker for the Timberwolves.
Also for Tigard, senior Isaia Porter shared both the Offensive Lineman of the Year honor (with West Linn junior Ryan Seth) and the Defensive Lineman of the Year honor (with Lake Oswego senior Mike Mercep).
For the Tigers, joining Lenzy and Porter on the All-Three Rivers League defense first team were senior lineman Noah Jackman, senior inside linebacker Mitchell Cross and senior outside linebacker Jazz Ross.
Tigard players earning all-league defense second-team honors included senior lineman Mahmud Mustafa and senior outside linebacker Fletcher Ahl.
Tigers earning honorable-mention accolades on defense included junior lineman Johnny Nomani, senior inside linebacker Carter Dennis, junior cornerback Josh Burns, sophomore safety Spencer Kuffel and senior safety Dylan Burch.
Tigard had four first-team picks on offense in Porter at tackle, Mustafa and Nomani at guard and senior Malcolm Stockdale at running back.
Tigers earning second-team honors on offense included senior receiver Luke Ness, sophomore quarterback Drew Carter and Ahl at fullback. Tigard players earning honorable-mention accolades on offense were Ross at receiver, Jackman at tight end, senior tackle Hayden McDonald and Cross at center.
Tigard junior Jackson Cleaver was a second-team all-league selection at place-kicker. Ahl was an honorable-mention pick as punter and Lenzy was an honorable-mention pick as a returner.
For Tualatin, joining Miller on the first-team defense were senior lineman Dane Norlin, senior outside linebacker Kyle Kamp and senior safety Jett Searle.
Timberwolves earning second-team honors on defense were junior lineman Jake Reser, senior cornerback Caden Dickson and junior safety Luke Marion.
Tualatin players earning honorable-mention accolades on defense included junior lineman Cody Van Meter, senior lineman Gavin Moore, senior inside linebacker Garrett Boespflug and junior inside linebacker Josh Boespflug.
The Wolves had three first-team picks on offense in Miller at tight end, senior Quinn McCarthy at tackle, Norlin at center and Kamp at fullback.
Tualatin senior Dominque Loggins was a second-team all-league selection at running back.
Timberwolves earning honorable-mention accolades on offense were Searle and Dickson at receiver, junior tackle Bret Gydesen and Van Meter and Moore at guard.
Tualatin senior Kyle Dernedde was a first-team all-league pick at both place-kicker and punter. Senior Jake Anderson was an honorable-mention pick as a returner.
Lake Oswego junior Casey Filkins was named the Three Rivers League Offensive Player of the Year and Lake Oswego's Steve Coury was tabbed the Coach of the Year.
