Tigard boys basketball team wins state tourney title
The Tigard Competitive Hoop sixth-grade boys basketball team wrapped up what could be called a spectacular season with a state championship.
The Tigard squad claimed the title at the 2019 Oregon Middle School Basketball Championships, held March 8-10 in Redmond and surrounding areas.
It's the second state title in three years for this Tigard team, who, as fourth-graders, won the fifth-grade Silver division title in 2017.
This year, competing in the sixth-grade Gold division, Tigard went 5-0 at the state tournament.
Starting play in the Pool A bracket, Tigard got a 66-21 win over Corvallis, followed by a 47-24 victory over West Salem. Those two wins put Tigard into the Bachelor Bracket.
In that bracket, Tigard bested Putnam 60-37 and then edged Sherwood 46-43 in the bracket final.
That put Tigard in the state championship game against the Jefferson Bracket champion, West Linn.
In the title contest, played March 10 at Ridgeview High School, the Tigard team came away with a 43-24 victory.
For the season, the Tigard squad went 32-0 in school-based tournaments. The team also played in AAU-based tournaments, playing at the highest level, and went 8-5 in those events, giving Tigard an overall season record of 40-5. The team also won eight tournament championships over the season.
The Tigard team includes players Colt Ness, Ollie Jones, Conner Riley, Caleb Anderson, Ivan Morales, Owen Wright, Jennings Oelke, Corbin Cichy, Trevin Laird, Zyon Floyd and Miles Ott.
The team's coaches are Steve Ness, David Jones and Jeremy Ott.
