Tigard softball bats heat up at tournament
Spring break has been no break at all for the Tigard High School softball team's offensive attack.
The Tigers, playing in the Jesuit/Mountainside Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, scored a total of 59 runs while going 4-0 at the event, with wins against St. Helens, Jesuit, Roosevelt and Grant.
With the four wins, Tigard upped its season record to 7-2.
The Tigers opened the tourney on Monday by running to a 20-0 five-inning win over St. Helens in a game played at Jesuit High School.
Junior Lexi Klum helped lead the attack in the win, going 2 for 3 at the plate with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and three RBIs. Freshman Kani Korok also had a big game, going 3 for 5 with a home run, a double and six RBIs. Junior Emilie Otto, who didn't even start the game, went hit a home run, stole a base, scored twice and drove in three runs.
Also for the Tigers in the win, junior Emily Paulson went 1 for 1 while walking four times, scoring a run and driving in a run. Senior Maddie Hoover and freshman Eliot Minor each scored twice. Sophomore Sophia vanderSommen went 2 for 3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs. Junior Elli Dardis went 2 for 2 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Makenna Reid threw a no-hitter in the victory, striking out 11 and walking three.
Later on Monday, the Tigers pulled away to get a 12-2 six-inning win over Jesuit.
Freshman Sera Reilly went 2 for 3 at the plate in that game, with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Paulson went 2 for 3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Klum also hit a home run, her third of the day.
Also for the Tigers, Reid went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Hoover doubled and scored twice. Korok drove in a pair of runs.
VanderSommen got the pitching win, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out one and walking two.
Tigard opened play on Tuesday by getting an 11-1 five-inning win over Roosevelt in a game played at Mountainside High School.
Reid went 3 for 3 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and three RBIs. Paulson went 2 for 2 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and four RBIs. Klum hit her fourth home run of the tournament, while driving in two runs. Hoover scored twice and junior Abby Soderquist doubled and scored a run.
VanderSommen picked up the pitching victory, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out four and walking none.
The Tigers finished up their tournament stay later on Monday by getting a 16-0 five-inning victory over Grant.
Reid had her second pitching shutout, allowing four hits, while striking out 11 and walking one. She also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored and four RBIs.
Also for Tigard, vanderSommen went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Korok went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Klum doubled and drove in two runs. Hoover doubled and scored once. Dardis and Otto each had a hit and three RBIs. Paulson, Minor and freshman Kaylin Kisor each scored twice.
The Tigers will be back in action on Monday, when they play at Westview in a non-league game starting at 5 p.m.
