The Sherwood Junior Baseball Organization Senior Federal baseball team (ages 14U) wasn't about to let anything stand in its way of a championship.
And nothing did.
The Sherwood team stormed to victory, in dominating fashion, at the JBO Senior Federal state tournament, held Friday through Sunday at Lebanon High School. The Bowmen went 4-0 at the eight-team, double-elimination tournament, scoring 45 runs in the process.
Sherwood opened the tournament on Friday by scoring a 9-4 win over Grant. Alex Armas helped lead the Bowmen's 14-hit attack in the victory, going 3 for 3 at the plate with a double, two stolen bases and three runs scored.
Nic Gribble went 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI. Wyatt Bugher went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Ezra Jimenez went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Gavon Gardner went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Ryan Gall hit a double, while also scoring a run and driving in a run. Vicente Zepeda scored twice. William Knudson scored a run and Talor Munson had a hit.
Knudson, Zepeda, Jimenez and Ryan DeVries all pitched for Sherwood in the win.
Later on Friday, the Bowmen posted a 12-3 win over Sprague in a winners' bracket semifinal game. Zepeda helped lead the offensive fireworks in that game, going 2 for 2 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and an RBI. Munson went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple two runs scored and two RBIs. Armas went 2 for 3 with a run scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Gall went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Jimenez went 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs.
Gribble hit a triple and scored a run. Bugher drove in two runs and Hank Gilbert had a hit and an RBI.
Munson, Austin Hannan and DeVries all pitched in the victory.
On Saturday, in the winners' bracket final, Sherwood ran to a 9-3 win over West Albany. Armas had another big game, going 3 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs. Jimenez went 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Gilbert, Gribble and Gardner had one hit apiece. DeVries, Zachary Aggson and Knudson each scored a run. Zepeda and DeVries combined to turn in a strong pitching performance.
In Sunday's championship game, Sherwood again faced West Albany, which bounced back to get a 3-0 win over Sprague in the losers' bracket final.
In the title tilt, the Bowmen, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, rallied from a 5-4 deficit to pound out a 15-10 victory, claiming the state championship.
Armas went 3 for 3 in the title contest, with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Munson went 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. DeVries went 2 for 4 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Gardner went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Gribble went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Jimenez hit a double and scored two runs. Gall also scored twice. Gilbert had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Zepeda had a hit and drove in two runs. Bugher had a hit and an RBI. Aggson scored a run and Hannan had a hit.
Munson, Zepeda, Hannan and DeVries all pitched in the championship game for Sherwood.
Coaches for the Sherwood team are Taylor Hill and Johnny Wade, with assistants Kenny Ballard, Josh Felix and Nic Garrison.
The Bowmen ended their season with a final overall record of 33-4.
