Sherwood rolls in conference football finale
The Sherwood High School football team left nothing to doubt in its 2019 Pacific Conference finale.
The Bowmen, in their final regular season game of the season, jumped out to a 35-0 lead on their way to getting a 49-13 win over Century in a Pacific Conference game played Friday at Century High School.
With the loss, Century moved to 0-4 in conference games (2-7 overall), putting the Jaguars in sixth place in the final conference standings. Sherwood improved to 4-0 in conference play (7-0 overall), leaving the Bowmen as the undisputed conference champions.
Sherwood took control early in Friday's regular-season finale. The Bowmen took a quick 7-0 lead on a 69-yard touchdown run by senior Brody Stevens, and extra-point kick by senior Kaedin Steindorf. Later in the first quarter, Sherwood junior Jack Causey scored on a 1-yard run to up the margin to 14-0.
The Bowmen got two more touchdowns in the second quarter. Senior running back Jamison Guerra scored on a 10-yard run, and senior tight end Blake Jensen caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Bjorn Bergstrom, giving Sherwood a 28-0 halftime lead.
The Bowmen upped the cushion to 35-0 in the third quarter, when Guerra scored on a 41-yard run.
Sherwood added two more TDs in the fourth quarter, coming on an 11-yard run by senior Lucas Voss and a 10-yard run by Causey.
Sherwood, for the game, rushed for 365 yards on 37 carries. Stevens led the Bowmen rushing attack with 126 yards on just five carries. Guerra ran for 60 yards on five carries. Junior Clay Peden ran for 60 yards on nine carries. Voss had 51 yards on six carries.
Bergstrom completed five of seven pass attempts for 45 yards. Senior Gavin Evans completed one of two passes for seven yards. Jensen led the Bowmen in catches with three grabs for 24 yards.
The Sherwood defense had seven quarterback sacks in the win. Jensen had two of those sacks. Junior Bryan Cuthbertson, senior Nick Severson, senior Logan Carr, senior Daniel Matzinger and junior Noah Culbertson had one apiece. Cuthbertson also led the team with 14 total tackles, including four tackles for losses.
Culbertson also had a fumble recovery. Senior Caleb Hagan and senior Brian Tziu-Rojas each had an interception.
For Century, junior Zachary Boehler and sophomore Tyler Mahlman combined to complete 26 of 48 pass attempts for 198 yards. Senior receiver Chance Sparks had 12 catches for 106 yards and a touchdown.
Both teams will open the Class 6A state playoffs on Friday. Sherwood will be home to face McNary and Century will play at top-seeded Tigard in games set to start at 7 p.m.
