Sherwood wrestlers battle at Idaho tourney
The Sherwood High School wrestling team started the new year with a quite a road trip.
And the Bowmen seemed to make it worth the while.
Sherwood battled its way to 25th place, with a score of 72 points, at the 79-school 2020 Rollie Lane Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Ford Center in Nampa, Idaho.
Junior Bryan Cuthbertson led the way for the Bowmen at the tournament. He went 6-1 at the event and took third place in the 220-pound weight class.
After receiving a first-round bye, Cuthbertson won two straight matches before falling to Eagle's Cortland Horton in the quarterfinals.
Cuthbertson bounced back to win his next four matches, capping things off by pinning Bryan Flores, of Nyssa, in a time of 2 minutes and 40 seconds in the third-place match.
While no other Sherwood wrestlers placed at the tournament, plenty of Bowmen had some success.
Sherwood sophomore Ethan Ritchie won his first three matches at 113. Sophomore Logan Swanson and senior Philip Resch each went 3-2 at 138. Senior Nick Severson went 4-2 at 285.
The Bowmen, who are 0-1 in Pacific Conference dual matches, will be back in action on Thursday, when they host Liberty in a conference match. Junior varsity bouts are set to start at 5:45 p.m., with varsity to follow at 7 p.m.
