Sherwood's Crabtree nabs boys state cross country title, Jesuit boys takes team
Sherwood's James Crabtree told Pamplin Media Group, following his individual win at the Pacific Conference Cross Country Championships a little more than a week ago, that while he certainly wasn't predicting victory at the state meet, he thought he could compete for what he said would be a special win.
The Bowmen senior got that win last Saturday, Nov. 6, at Lane Community College in Eugene, finishing in a time of 15:04.5, less than a second ahead of second-place finisher Charlie North of Franklin.
"I definitely got a little excited at the start, but it was a fast, honest pace," Crabtree said. "I think the most surprising part of the race was that I was alone in front for so long. I was certain guys were gonna go with me the first mile."
Was winning what he thought it would be?
"I'm still in disbelief that I won the race," Crabtree said. "I was just so happy we had a state meet this year, that winning the thing wasn't even in my mind at the start of the season."
Rounding out the top five were Wesley Shipsey (15:08.1) of Central Catholic, Jacob Nenow (15:09.8) of Jesuit, and Caleb Lakeman (15:15.1)of Tualatin.
Nenow was the top finisher for the Jesuit boys team that took home the 6A team competition, finishing with 66 points, 17 clear of second-place finisher Central Catholic (83). Lincoln was third (112), Franklin fourth (140), followed by Sherwood (209).
Other members of the championship Jesuit team included: Caden Hildenbrand (12th), Josh Augustine (15th), Gus Clevenger (17th), Caden Swanson (18th), John Schuler (22nd) and Dominic Ricci (27th).

On the girls side, Summit narrowly squeaked past Jesuit, finishing with 55 points to the Crusaders' 58.
Lake Oswego junior Kate Peters — to no one's surprise — took home individual honors, finishing with a time of 17:28.7. Jesuit's Chloe Foerster (17:35.0) finished second respectively, while Franklin's Kaiya Robertson was third (17:44.6), Wells' Charlotte Richman was fourth (17:59.3) and Jesuit freshman Emma Bennett was fifth (18:01.8).
Rounding out the top five in the team competition were Lincoln (101) in third, Franklin (142) fourth and Wells (184) fifth.
In addition to Foerster and Bennett, Jesuit finishers included: Maura O'Scannlain (13th) Natalie Jack (18th), Liliana Hudnut (20th), Maggie Bennett (26th) and Amalie Beil (54th).
Sherwood finished sixth and was led by Nancy Biegel, who placed 11th.
In the 4A competition, the Valley Catholic boys consisting of Henry Tierney, Jonathan Nerenberg, Ryan Hoffman, Morgan Amano, Kyle Becker, Peter Davis and Joseph Aiello finished fourth in the team competition, while the Valiants girls were fifth, led by Maslin Sigler who placed 11th individually, followed by Brooke Heussner, Jaya Simmons, Kelly Nerenberg, Claire Lambson, Sarah Rossetti and Tate Moore.
