The Les Schwab Invitational — the biggest and most competitive high school boys basketball tournament in Oregon — has announced its first-round match-ups and complete bracket for the 2021 tournament.
The 25th anniversary of Oregon's top holiday tournament tips off Sunday, Dec. 26, at Liberty High School in Hillsboro. The LSI features one of the top-ranked teams in the country, Link Academy (of Bronson, Missouri), which will make its tournament debut. The Link Academy Lions feature a handful of high major players led by ESPN No. 7 senior forward Jordan Walsh (6-foot-7).
Also making its LSI debut will be Isidore Newman (of New Orleans, Louisiana), which is led by consensus top 50 junior Chris Lockett (6-4) and Arch Manning (6-3), nephew of Payton and Eli Manning; he is the top quarterback and No. 1 football recruit in the country.
Gonzaga College (of Washington D.C.) will return to the LSI looking for its first tournament trophy after finishing third in both 2012 and 2016.
Headlining the list of Oregon teams is West Linn High School, which features one of the country's top point guards – University of Oregon commit junior Jackson Shelstad (6-1). Shelstad averaged over 25 points per game in the shortened 2021 season and will play an even larger role for the Lions during his junior campaign.
Event mainstays Central Catholic, Grant and first-time LSI participant Roosevelt figure to compete with West Linn for the top-ranked team in the state.
Nine other Oregon schools round out the 2021 field: Barlow (Mt. Hood Conference – 6A); Beaverton (Metro League – 6A); Churchill (Midwestern League – 5A); Cleveland (Portland Interscholastic League – 6A); Gresham (Mt. Hood Conference – 6A); Jesuit (Metro League – 6A); Lake Oswego (Three Rivers League – 6A); Tigard (Three Rivers League – 6A); and Tualatin (Three Rivers League – 6A).
