The Jesuit volleyball team may have come up just short in their bid for a state title, but their work this past fall didn't go unnoticed by those around the state, for five Crusader netters were honored on this year's list of 6A all-state honorees—two of which were first-teamers.
Jesuit's senior middle blocker Tess Masingale, along with fellow senior, libero Maisie Alexander, joined Sheldon's Beaux Bruegman, Central Catholic's Elliott Bush, South Salem's Laila Leaks, and West Linn's Emily Warmenhoven on this year's first team.
Both Masingale and Alexander were key contributors to a Jesuit team that won the Metro League with an undefeated 12-0 record, finished 27-3 overall, and won playoff games over Tualatin, West Salem, Sprague and Bend before falling to West Linn in the state final.
Jesuit head coach Teresa Zimmerlee may have summed-up Masingale's potency best following a match earlier this season.
"She's really hard to stop," she said with a smile. "When we get her the ball she has great reach and can send it back pretty aggressively. She's very difficult to defend."
Joining the Crusader first-teamers on this year's list of honorees was second-teamer, junior Isabel Patterson, in addition to honorable mention selections, junior Ceanna O'Loughlin and freshman Jackie Carle.
Along with Jesuit's selections, Mountainside, Westview, Tualatin and Sherwood each boasted an honoree, with the Mavericks' Emma Burlingame earning second team honors, Alyssa Kapuniai-Ryan earning honorable mention for the Bowmen, with Wildcats junior Alize Bakker joining her on the list of honorable mention selections.
Sherwood finished 18-4 overall and won the Pacific Conference before losing the state playoffs' second round to Sprague.
Westview finished second to Jesuit in the Metro League and advanced to the second round where they lost to state power Oregon City, while Mountainside too advanced to the state playoffs before losing a second-round game to Bend.
West Linn's Emily Warmenhoven was the 6A Player of the Year, while David Douglas' Janeen Rainey earned Coach of the Year honors.
In the 4A classification, Beaverton's Valley Catholic tallied three all-state honorees, including first-teamers, senior Kyle King and junior Frances Eisenhardt, along with Valiants sophomore Katiya Blas-Arellano who earned an honorable mention selection.
Valley Catholic finished 19-6 overall and won the Cowapa League before losing to Cascade in the state semifinals.
Sweet Home's Jamie Seward was the 4A's Player of the Year, while Cascade's Cristina Williams was the Coach of the Year.
