by: SUBMITTED - Fire crews averted a major barn fire Wednesday that destroyed a $30,000 Hyster at Coleman Farms in St. Paul. The fire was put out before it spread to the rest of the barn, fire district officials said. Fire crews from Woodburn and St. Paul fire districts extinguished a barn fire late Wednesday afternoon that could have been much worse, according to initial reports.

The fire started in a Hyster lift truck that was parked inside a 20,000 square foot barn at Coleman Farms in the 15000 block of River Road Northeast in St. Paul.

Upon arrival, firefighters aggressively applied water directly to the lift truck and nearby straw that had caught fire. This kept the fire from spreading and igniting the entire building. The fire was deemed under control within 45 minutes.

According to Woodburn Fire District, early investigation indicates that the Hyster experienced a mechanical problem.

The barn sustained $5,000 in damage and the Hyster, valued at $30,000, was a total loss, WFD said in a news release.

No injuries were reported.
