by: PHIL HAWKINS - First responders use the Jaws of Life to extricate victims of a three-car crash from a Lincoln Navigator Wednesday. One person died and one was injured in a three-car crash on River Road last Wednesday evening.

According to Marion County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on the 9800 block of River Road, outside the entrance of Egan Gardens, west of Brooks.

The investigation conducted by Traffic Safety Team Deputies determined that a 2013 Cadillac, driven by Loyd Penner, 86, of Dallas was slowing and preparing to make a left hand turn into Egan Gardens.

According to police, for reasons unknown, Penner turned in front of a gray Toyota Scion being driven southbound by Adan Ortiz-Juarez, 41, of Salem.

After the two vehicles collided, they careened into a third vehicle that was waiting to leave Egan Gardens. The third vehicle, a tan Toyota, was being operated by Julie Huster, 54 of Salem.

Neither Ortiz-Juarez nor Huster were injured in the collision, but Penner's wife, Lavaughn Penner, 85, was killed in the collision. She was riding in the front passenger seat during the crash.

Airbags did deploy in Penner's and Ortiz-Juarez’s vehicles. All parties involved in the crash were wearing both lap and shoulder seat belts, police said.

As a result of the collision, all three vehicles had to be towed from the scene. Deputies will determine over the next days whether any drivers will be cited for any driving offenses.
