PDX remnants available in May

RAY HUGHEY - Nagl Floor Covering co-owner Randy Schultze displays a flag that represents the graphic '80s carpet design at the Portland International Airport. Carpet remnants from the airport will be at Nagl in May and available for purchase.Everyone wanted a piece of this action, a piece of the bright blue carpet with a graphic ‘80s design from Portland International Airport.

And last week, the Port of Portland announced where they could get it.

Four vendors out of 32 were chosen to repurpose and distribute remnants of the iconic PDX carpet, including Nagl Floor Covering in Aurora. The other successful bidders were City Liquidators, Carpet Mill Outlet and Two Dogs in a Boat.

“We were very fortunate,” said Randy Schultze, co-owner of Nagl Flooring. “We were working with a couple of designers who are relatives of mine, my son, Nathan, and his wife, Becka.”

“They encouraged me to bid this,” Schultze said. “We sort of followed it online and after the pre-bid meeting I thought we had a good shot at it.”

He knew last week an announcement was pending, he said.

“I didn’t know we got it for sure until someone called (Wednesday) and asked if they could purchase some,” Schultze said.

He felt Nagl was selected for the professionalism of its proposals, and what it offered as a floor covering company as far as distribution, facilities and knowledge of the carpet industry.

The intent of the Port was to get the carpeting into as many hands as possible, he said. “We’re offering smaller versions of carpet in wall art, doormats, coasters and travelers.”

For nearly 30 years, the PDX carpet welcomed and bid bon voyage to air travelers and developed its own fan following along the way.

Many fans enjoyed taking pictures of their feet on the carpet and posting them to the Internet. And when the airport removed the carpet in January, everyone wanted a piece.

Each will receive a thousand square yards of carpet, Schultze said. “The Port is only distributing carpet in lower traffic areas so it will be in fairly decent shape,” he said.

The vendors expect to receive their carpet in late April or May.

“We’re taking pre-orders,” Schultze said. Nagl Floor Covering has a PDX carpet website at

“We’re going to be donating a percentage of profits to three organizations in the Portland area – Portland Rescue Mission, Outside In and Doernbecher Children's Hospital.”
