Arbor Day event will be held on April 7 at Legion Park and features children's activities, tree giveaway

The city of Woodburn is hosting an Arbor Day event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 7 at Legion Park.

Arbor Day is celebrated in Oregon the first full week of April.

There will be kids crafts and activities, certified arborists from R&R Tree Service available to answer your tree care questions, and a free tree takeaway for residents who live within the city limits.

Supplies will be limited, and there may be exceptions for those who want to plant in city right-of-way.

Free coloring and activity sheets celebrating trees are also available at City Hall and the Woodburn Public Library!

If you can't make the event but still would like to take advantage of the free tree giveaway program, you can apply to get a tree to plant on your property.

Once your application is approved, you will receive a gift certificate for one of the six trees you can choose from at Al's Garden Center in Woodburn.

Tree options include: Kousa dogwood, Japanese maple, Sun Valley red maple, Cleveland select flowering pear, autumn blaze maple or a Raywood ash.

What's the catch? You just need to make the commitment to properly plant and water the tree for the next two years to give the tree the best shot at surviving.

Residents of Woodburn have until April 30 (or whenever the budgeted funds expire) to get a tree giveaway application in.
