North Marion High School senior was one of 29 nominees for the annual Amazing Kid event

PHIL HAWKINS - Mikayla Golka, a senior at North Marion High School, was surprised during her concert band class with the announcement that she has been named the Woodburn Independent's 2018 Amazing Kid. The Woodburn Independent staff has selected its 2018 Amazing Kid, and the winner is Mikayla Golka, a senior at North Marion High School.

Mikayla, a resident of Hubbard, is the first student from North Marion to be selected for the honor.

Nominated by math teacher Remy Strapp, Golka is a tireless volunteer with a resume a mile long, but in addition to that, she's a gifted artist who has harnessed that passion to make a difference. She has been instrumental in creating murals that have transformed the city of Donald's skate park and she produced an art series on the effects of bullying that has been displayed around the high school.

The Independent received a record number of nominations for its Amazing Kid program this year: 29. The Independent, in partnership with Chemeketa Community College, has honored all nominees in a local ceremony. But Golka is selected to represent the Woodburn area at a gala event scheduled to be held at OMSI in Portland later this spring. She will also be featured in a special section.
